Information for Instructors

Syllabus Statement

The Writing Center provides free, one-to-one writing support to all SHU students, regardless of academic discipline or background. Peer writing tutors will work with students at any stage of the writing process, from brainstorming to revisions. Learn more about our services, what to expect from a session, and online writing resources at writingcenter.sienaheights.edu.

Support Services We Provide to Students

Your students can find the Writing Center on the main floor of the SHU Library. Students can make appointments in advance using the scheduling book in the center or just drop in to work with an available tutor. The standard appointment length is 30 minutes. Tutors will work with students on assignments from courses in any discipline. You will receive records of your students' visits to the Writing Center in the form of session summary slips, which are delivered through campus mail. FYE instructors will generally be notified by e-mail.

We want you to encourage your students to use our services. As you do so, please keep the following in mind:
  • If you require students to use the writing center, please give them multiple opportunities to visit throughout the semester. When a whole class is required to visit for the same assignment, it can be difficult for tutors to hold full sessions with each student in the time frame that they have.
  • Tutors will work with students at any stage of the writing process. They can guide students through brainstorming exercises, creating outlines, drafting, and revising. Encourage your students to come early in the process and let them know they can come more than once for the same assignment.

Classroom Visits

Our brief classroom visits will introduce your students to the support services available through the SHU Writing Center. Please contact the Center Director, Dr. Dana Schumacher-Schmidt, at dschumac@sienaheights.edu or 517-264-7675 to discuss scheduling a visit tailored to your class's need.
